New York-Budapest Direct Flights Poised for Return, Boosting Tourism

After a long hiatus, direct flights between Budapest and New York may resume as early as this year. Negotiations are in their final stages, with three airlines in discussions to reestablish air links between Hungary and the United States. This development is expected to significantly boost tourism and economic ties between the two countries.

American Tourists: A Key Market for Budapest

American tourists are among the most valuable visitors to Budapest, spending an average of HUF 142,000 (USD 362) per day in local hotels—more than double that of Italian tourists. Their primary interests lie in cultural attractions and unique programs rather than nightlife. Before the pandemic, nearly as many American tourists visited Budapest as British tourists, despite the greater distance, highlighting their strong presence in the Hungarian capital.

Budapest’s Tourism Growth and Strategic Goals

Hungary’s tourism industry has seen remarkable growth, with Budapest emerging as a global leader in visitor increases. In 2024, the country surpassed European averages in guest night growth, and projections suggest it may achieve its 2030 goal of 20 million annual visitors much earlier. The government has taken significant steps to enhance the tourism sector, including the launch of a dedicated tourism bank and a digital SZÉP card for payments.

Expanding Air Connectivity and Economic Impact

The return of direct flights will not only attract more American tourists but also facilitate business, trade, and cultural exchanges. Direct connections reduce travel time, making Hungary a more attractive destination for both visitors and investors. Moreover, improved connectivity will strengthen ties with the Hungarian diaspora in the U.S., making family visits and cultural exchanges more convenient.

With China already operating 21 direct flights to Budapest from seven major cities, Hungary is positioning itself as a regional leader in air connectivity. If the New York flights resume successfully, more direct routes to the U.S. may follow, further solidifying Budapest’s status as a key European destination for American travelers.

The official announcement of the New York-Budapest direct flight is expected soon, promising new opportunities for tourism, business, and international relations.
