Bejgli is a traditional Christmas sweet and an essential part of Hungarian family holiday celebrations. That is why we were eagerly awaiting the Bejgli of the Year competition, which reveals where Hungary's most delicious bejgli are made.
This year, the Hungarian Confectioners' Guild announced the sixth annual Bejgli of the Year competition for confectioners, restaurants, and artisan bakeries. The jury certainly did not have an easy task, as they tasted and evaluated a record number of 59 bejglis in three categories this year.
Prim Cukrászda & Café in Szekszárd won the walnut bejgli category, Bejó Cukrászda in Békéscsaba won the poppy seed bejgli category, and Mák Kézműves Cukrászda in Piliscsaba won the gourmet category with its bejgli called Sütőtökvarázs (Pumpkin Magic).
Why is the Bejgli of the Year chosen?
The aim of the competition is to draw attention to festive cakes made from quality ingredients and to bring consumers closer to the true values of artisan bejgli.

In the gourmet category, experts entered several special flavor combinations. Among the oilseeds, pecans are still a hit, but hazelnut fillings flavored with various spices are also popular among competitors.
The gourmet bejgli of the year, Sütőtökvarázs, for example, is a specialty made with minced roasted pumpkin seeds, ginger, orange peel, and cinnamon-flavored pumpkin filling.

The fruits represented were apples, pears, raspberries, strawberries, sour cherries, apricots, figs, oranges, and mandarins. New flavors this year included rose water, Earl Grey tea, pine bud syrup, whiskey, and gin.
Budapest confectionery wins highest overall score in Bejgli of the Year competition
The winner of the Bejgli of the Year craftsmanship award, which is given to the competitor who achieves podium positions in multiple categories and thus the highest overall score, was Kiss Károlyné (Major Cukrászda, Budapest).
