What are Travelers Looking for in Hotels in Hungary during the Holidays?

2025.12.02

Let's see what those traveling with families prefer and what New Year's Eve partygoers or companies are looking for in hotels in Hungary during the holiday season.

For hotels, the holiday season traditionally means high occupancy, but the nature of the load is fundamentally different from that which characterizes an average weekday during the year. While the presence of the business travel segment is decreasing, family guests are taking over, who often base their stay not on sightseeing, but on meeting relatives. According to statistics, in December 2024, the occupancy rate of Hungarian hotels was 52.3 percent, and in Budapest it rose to 73.1 percent. However, the appearance of family travelers requires a completely different type of attention.

“During the holiday season, the hotel industry experiences a slightly different level of demand, as family travelers no longer focus on sightseeing but rather on their loved ones. Our role is to create an environment where they feel comfortable and receive an unobtrusive service. The decoration, soft music, scents, food and quality of service play a key role in this,” said Csaba Palotai, Director of TRIBE & ibis Styles Budapest Airport.

Family visits and Christmas markets

Families often come for more than just one night: they look for larger apartment rooms, connecting units and common spaces where even several generations can spend the holidays together. At this time, hotels are flooded with Santa Claus and Christmas events, smaller family celebrations and when someone chooses accommodation near the airport before or after a visit abroad.

December traffic is significantly boosted by the Budapest Advent Markets, which have been high on European rankings for years. The international reputation and the city's safe environment attract many foreign visitors, while the proportion of guests from the countryside is also increasing year by year. Many come specifically for the markets, while others combine the Christmas program with a city break.

Guests' accommodation choices are split spectacularly. A significant number of them seek the hustle and bustle of the city center because they want to be close to the festive lights and programs, while others prefer the outskirts of the city so that they can relax in a quieter environment after the excitement.

Many people escape the fireworks on New Year's Eve

The area around the last day of the year shows a particularly sharp difference between hotels in the city center and the outer districts. Those looking to party are looking for central hotels, while those looking for family relaxation and intimacy are consciously choosing the suburbs and the airport area. The protection of pets has also become a factor that determines the decision of many guests, as suburban and airport hotels are further away from loud fireworks.

“Suburban hotels are attractive to those who want to spend an intimate, quiet vacation with their family members, or even with their pets, away from fireworks or loud noise. Guests are not only looking for an experience, but also a safe and calm environment, and this is especially important at the end of the year,” says Csaba Palotai, who added that all rooms in their airport hotels are basically heavily soundproofed to avoid the noise of the planes, so they can offer their guests a comfortable and quiet vacation even during the New Year's Eve fireworks.

What do companies expect?

Flexibility and smooth running have become one of the most important expectations for corporate events. Companies are looking for venues where the atmosphere is also suitable in addition to the hospitality, and where even last-minute modifications are handled professionally.

“When organizing corporate meetings, a key aspect is that the hotel can satisfy all the needs of the client. Hotels near the airport are becoming increasingly popular because they are an ideal meeting point for those who come to the corporate event from different parts of the city or even from other countries,” said Csaba Palotai, director of TRIBE & ibis Styles Budapest Airport.
