Hidden Transport Stories in a New Museum Exhibition

“Budapest Tales,” a new underground exhibition showcases ten memorable chapters from Budapest’s rich transport heritage.

Budapest’s transport history takes center stage in a new temporary exhibition at the Deák Square Underground Railway Museum. Titled Budapest Tales or "Budapesti mesék", the exhibition presents ten fascinating stories from more than 150 years of the capital’s past, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the evolution of public transport and daily life in the city. The exhibit also particpates in June 20's Night of Museums event.

The exhibition explores a wide range of topics, from the horse-drawn vehicles that once travelled Budapest’s streets to the technological innovations that attracted international attention, including a visit by the Brazilian emperor. Visitors can also learn how tram routes were identified before numbering systems were introduced, when women first began working in Budapest’s transport sector, and what precautions were taken on public vehicles during the Spanish flu pandemic.

Through historic objects, transport memorabilia, photographs, posters, documents, and passenger information materials, *Budapest Tales* highlights both well-known and lesser-known chapters of the city’s development. The stories reveal how transport helped shape Budapest’s culture, urban growth, and everyday life, while introducing visitors to iconic vehicles, unusual initiatives, and the origins of familiar transport rules and signs.

The exhibition is included with the regular admission ticket to the museum’s permanent collection and can be visited throughout the year. Visitors interested in learning more can also purchase a companion book based on the exhibition.

Located beneath bustling Deák Ferenc Square, the museum itself is housed within a preserved section of the original Millennium Underground Railway, the oldest metro line on mainland Europe and one of Budapest’s most unique historical attractions.
