Science gets an after-dark makeover in Budapest on September 25–26, when laboratories, universities and research institutions invite the public to explore their work.

What can you do? Watch experiments, explore laboratories, meet researchers and get a glimpse of what normally happens behind university doors. And you don't need to be a scientist: the programme covers everything from volcanoes and rockets to artificial intelligence, medicine, archaeology and psychology.

At ELTE, you can get hands-on with chemistry, discover how scientists study volcanoes and climate, visit laboratories and explore subjects ranging from archaeology to artificial intelligence. ELTE’s 2026 programme

At the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), expect a distinctly engineering-flavoured evening, with programmes including engine experiments, combustion demonstrations and even a water rocket. BME’s programme

Meanwhile, Semmelweis University offers a look at the science of the human body, with interactive biomechanics demonstrations, chemistry experiments and lifesaving-skills activities. Semmelweis University’s programme

There is plenty for curious visitors beyond the sciences, too, including history, languages, culture and the ways researchers are using AI to investigate the past.

Most events are free, although some require registration and have limited places. Since programmes take place at venues all over Budapest, check the official schedule before heading out – and look specifically for events marked English if you don't speak Hungarian.

Kutatók Éjszakája takes place on September 25–26, 2026, with hundreds of events across Budapest and Hungary.
