Starting May 2026, travelers will once again be able to fly directly between the United States and Hungary, as American Airlines resumes its daily service between Philadelphia and Budapest.
The long-anticipated announcement was made by Hungarian Economic Development Minister Márton Nagy, who emphasized the significance of the renewed transatlantic link. “This is not just a new route—it’s a new opportunity for Hungary,” he wrote on Facebook, adding that the direct flights will boost tourism, simplify travel, and strengthen economic ties between the two countries.
There have been no direct flights between the U.S. and Hungary since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Before then, American Airlines operated daily flights between Philadelphia and Budapest, while LOT Polish Airlines offered direct routes from Budapest to New York and Chicago.

This new development marks a major milestone in reconnecting Hungary with North America. It also signals growing interest in Hungary as a travel destination and business hub, particularly from the United States.
American Airlines’ decision to restart the Philadelphia–Budapest route reflects a positive outlook for international travel and tourism in the coming years. For American tourists, this new direct connection offers a convenient gateway to discover Budapest’s historic sights, vibrant cultural life, and world-famous hospitality—without the need for a layover.
Tickets will be available for purchase starting August 11, 2025, via the American Airlines website and mobile app: https://www.aa.com/
Whether you're planning a Danube river cruise, a weekend exploring thermal baths and ruin bars, or a longer journey through Central Europe, starting your trip with a nonstop flight to Budapest just got easier.
