Contemporary Divas at JazzFest Budapest

2025.09.23

Robin McKelle will perform at the Eiffel Workshop in Budapest on 27 October, and Brandee Younger on 3 November, both organised by JazzFest Budapest.

Two separate worlds, yet a common mission: Brandee Younger and Robin McKelle approached the world of jazz from different angles, but they both ask the same question: how can the legacy of jazz be preserved while exploring new sounds and possibilities?

Younger is pushing the boundaries of jazz with her harp, while McKelle is reimagining Ella Fitzgerald's legacy. Robin McKelle will perform at the Eiffel Workshop in Budapest on 27 October, and Brandee Younger on 3 November, both organised by JazzFest Budapest.

Brandee Younger at JazzFest Budapest

The sound of the harp is rarely heard on jazz stages, but Brandee Younger has proven that this instrument can speak with elemental power in both classical and contemporary jazz, soul, and hip-hop settings. “The harp can be at home anywhere,” she says. On her latest album, Gadabout Season, released on the prestigious Impulse! Records label – she continues her journey of original compositions, following in the footsteps of her illustrious predecessors, Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby. The recordings were partly made in Younger’s own East Harlem apartment, making the music even more intimate and personal. “I played in big bands for many years. Now, I finally feel like I can create music that truly speaks to me. I can blend the two worlds in a way that feels completely authentic,” says Younger. Her concerts combine the depths of spiritual jazz, the freshness of urban rhythms, and the uplifting sound of the harp, evoking tradition and the freedom of contemporary music.

Robin McKelle brings Ella Fitzgerald's timeless songs to life

Robin McKelle is one of the most versatile contemporary jazz, soul and blues singers. Her elegance, passion and powerful stage presence elevate her to the top of the list. This time, she is coming to Budapest with a special programme: her concert will pay tribute to the legendary Ella Fitzgerald, bringing the timeless songs of the 'Lady of Jazz' to life. McKelle's voice captures Ella's sophisticated style, while also reimagining the classics with her own unique flair and energy. "I missed the magic of live music and the pulse of swing. I felt it was time to return to my roots and sing in the language of traditional jazz again," says McKelle. The evening will be a nostalgic journey and a contemporary jazz experience, a tribute to the past in the sound of the present.

JazzFest Budapest evokes the spirit of Miles Davis

The JazzFest Budapest autumn concerts will also evoke the spirit of Miles Davis, the eternal innovator who constantly pushed the boundaries of the genre. His former bandmates Marcus Miller, Bill Evans and Kenny Garrett will be in Budapest, as will Keyon Harrold — one of the most charismatic and versatile wind players of our time — who played Miles Davis's trumpet in the film Miles Ahead. On 29 October, Richard Bona — the world-famous Cameroonian bassist, singer and composer also known as the 'West African Sting' — will return to Hungary with his band. Joining him on stage will be Hungarian percussion virtuoso Kornél Mogyoró, whose delicate rhythmic style complements Richard Bona's music perfectly, creating an unforgettable encounter.
