Big changes are on the horizon for the southern part of Budapest’s Óbuda Island, a spot best known internationally as the home of the Sziget Festival. A major redevelopment project will transform the area into a vibrant year-round cultural and leisure hub
Unveiled during a press event on the Sziget Festival grounds, the plans reveal an ambitious, multi-purpose complex covering 27,000 square meters. The first phase is set to open as early as late September this year, starting with a flexible outdoor venue that will host a series of pop-up events to warm up the space. By early December, visitors can expect the grand debut of the Light Museum, aligning with Óbuda’s festive Advent market. The indoor facilities, including two large event halls, are planned to open within 6–10 months, followed later by a family-friendly sports park and a dog beach.
The vision blends modern attractions with heritage preservation. At the heart of the project is the historic H/122 building, a 19th-century industrial hall to be restored to its pre–World War II grandeur. The larger section will host sports events, concerts, and conferences for up to 5,000 guests, while the smaller hall will become the new home of Cinema Hall, a popular music club. Outdoor features will include a 1,500-square-meter open-air event space for concerts, weddings, and corporate gatherings—operating until 10 p.m. to respect the neighborhood’s peace.

For locals and tourists alike, the project offers a wide range of attractions:
- One of Europe’s largest light parks, with immersive digital art installations, interactive spaces, and elements from Amsterdam’s world-famous light art collection.
- A 10,000-square-meter Ovisport Park, with playgrounds, streetball courts, a mini football pitch, a climbing course, rest areas, and bike facilities.
- A riverside café and extensive recreational areas open to all visitors, ensuring that the island remains a welcoming green space.
- The developers promised to preserve Óbuda Island’s natural beauty while improving north–south access across its length. The project also emphasizes sustainability and community benefit.
