when does the biodome in budapest open?

The Biodome's Urban Oasis may Open on July 1

2026.06.09

The Biodome and the urban oasis that can be visited all year round will await us all with exotic plants and special animal species, probably from July 1.

The Biodome and the urban oasis within it are expected to open their doors on July 1, which is expected to increase the annual number of visitors by about 100,000 people, said Zoltán Hanga, spokesperson for the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden.

A month ago, the institution announced the opening of an area of about one hectare in the central part of the Biodome in mid-summer. An urban oasis that can be visited all year round will await the public at the site, with exotic plants and special animal species.

Biodome's Urban Oasis to Open with Rare Species and a Giant Waterfall

As it was written at the time, about 13,000 tropical and subtropical plants will be planted in the Biodome, and we will also be able to meet stilts, critically endangered Bali starlings and spurred tortoises. The atmosphere of the central hall is completed by a waterfall cascading from a height of 14 and a half meters, in addition to the zoological and botanical attractions located on several levels.

"We also have ideas for further steps. These could include relocating the elephants to their new accommodations in the Biodome, or setting up a new, modern exhibition space for sea lions, and relocating the sea lions. We cannot yet say exactly what the next step will be and when it will be implemented, it depends on several technical and financial conditions, which we cannot yet foresee in all respects. One thing is certain, the more people honor us with their visits, the better the opportunities for further progress" - noted Zoltán Hanga.

When asked why the opening of the Biodome urban oasis was delayed by half a year compared to the previously planned date of the end of last year, the spokesperson emphasized: it was indeed an earlier date, but both the technical and financial conditions had to be met, which has only now become possible.

More visitors expected

The spokesperson reported that 1,069,455 people visited the zoo in 2025, and there were another 200,000 visitors to the Margaret Island Zoo. "We are confident that the opening of the Biodóm city oasis will increase the number of visitors by about 100,000 people."

The Biodome has already hosted a number of events since 2024. These included the two light domes, the World Press Photo exhibition, the fossil exhibition or the Art Aqua fine arts exhibition, which attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors.
