BKK (Budapest Transport Centre) is introducing a new, data-based aircraft traffic monitoring system that will help flexibly increase the frequency of the 100E airport bus service based on real-time data, they write on their website. This is important because thanks to this solution, the flight schedule can be quickly and accurately adjusted to the current traffic at Liszt Ferenc International Airport. BKK has been testing the development since March, and based on the positive experience, they have now decided to finally introduce the system.
How does the new system work?
Due to the specifics of air transport – especially delays and schedule changes – it is possible that many more passengers than usual will arrive at Liszt Ferenc International Airport at the same time within a short period of time. The Budapest Transport Centre aims to provide a reliable service tailored to the needs of passengers, which is why it launched a new pilot system in March 2026 that allows traffic management professionals to know about airport congestion hours in advance.
Here's how it works: the system sends an automatic signal if, according to forecasts, more aircraft are expected to arrive in the coming period than usual. This allows them to increase the number of 100E buses if necessary, which can reduce congestion and make travel more comfortable.
The algorithm optimizes interventions over a 90–120-minute time frame, providing traffic management with enough time to take operational measures. The solution integrates timetable and airport data, thus displaying the information necessary for decisions on a single interface.
In the future, BKK would like to support the efficient operation of public transport in the capital with further data-driven developments based on the experiences of the pilot.
