Best Free Carnival Programs in Budapest in February 2026

2026.02.02

From free concerts and family programs to magic shows, fashion events and cultural festivals, here’s a handpicked taste of the best free carnival programs Budapest has to offer this February.

Winter may still be hanging around, but in Budapest, February is all about colour, costumes and cheerful chaos. Carnival season (Farsang) is the perfect excuse to dress up, go out, try something new – or simply enjoy the city’s most playful events. From magic shows in ruin pubs and horse racing in costumes to family-friendly afternoons and fashion-forward programs, here are some of the coolest free carnival programs in Budapest this February.

1. Carnival Magic at Lámpás Ruin Pub

3 February, Lámpás Ruin Pub

If you’re looking for a truly Budapest-style carnival experience, start with a ruin pub – and not just any ruin pub. Lámpás is hosting a special carnival and Valentine’s-themed magic night, where modern illusion and mentalism take centre stage.

Expect a cosy, slightly mysterious atmosphere, elegant yet playful vibes, and a live mentalist performance by Szabolcs Molnár that will keep you guessing all evening. Guests are encouraged to dress up, wear masks or simply add a festive touch to their outfit. Entry is free, the mood is welcoming, and the magic is very real – at least for one night.

2. Ügetőfarsang at Kincsem Park

7 February, Kincsem Park

Budapest’s carnival season wouldn’t be complete without one of its most unique traditions: Ügetőfarsang at Kincsem Park. This lively event combines horse racing with costumes, games and a full-on winter party atmosphere.

Arrive in costume and you might even be rewarded – the first 500 costumed guests will receive a free cup of mulled wine (or tea). Beyond the races, expect themed competitions, children’s programs, carnival doughnuts, games, prize draws and plenty of reasons to cheer from the stands. Admission is free, making this a perfect choice for families and groups of friends alike.

3. Blues Fathers – Carnival Concert

7 February | Oporto 2 Budapest

Not into costumes but still in the mood for good vibes? Head to Oporto 2 Budapest for a carnival-flavoured blues-rock concert by Blues Fathers. Their setlist mixes classic blues-rock hits with original songs, all carrying one shared message: winter won’t last forever, spring is coming.

The venue is friendly, the music is warm and uplifting, and the concert is free to attend. Sometimes, carnival spirit isn’t about masks – it’s about great live music and shared optimism.

4. Umbrella Carnival in Óbuda

14 February, Óbuda

For families and younger carnival fans, the Umbrella Carnival in Óbuda offers a colourful afternoon packed with creativity and play. Hosted at the Szindbád Event Hall, this event focuses on hands-on experiences: craft workshops, playful carnival challenges and an interactive adventure route designed especially for children.

The highlight of the afternoon is a live concert by the Drazsé Band, who will present songs from their brand-new album exclusively at this venue. A special carnival menu at the café completes the experience, making it an easy-going, joyful program for all ages. Participation is free.

5. Fashion Instead of Costumes: The Fashion Hub

14–15 February, Museum of Fine Arts

If your idea of carnival style is less costume drama and more fashion inspiration, The Fashion Hub is the place to be. Connected to the Budapest Central European Fashion Week, this free event opens the doors of the fashion world to the public.

Talks, workshops, panel discussions and presentations offer insight into contemporary fashion, with a special focus on young creatives and Generation Z. Some programs require registration, but the overall atmosphere is open, inspiring and welcoming – perfect for anyone curious about design, trends and creative careers.

6. Refresh Your Wardrobe at Belvárosi Gardróbvásár

21 February | Erzsébet Square

Carnival season is also a great excuse to rethink your wardrobe. The Belvárosi Gardróbvásár is a central Budapest clothing swap and sale event where sustainability meets style.

Browse unique second-hand pieces, sell clothes you no longer wear, or simply enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. The event promotes conscious fashion, supports reuse over fast fashion, and even includes a clothing donation opportunity for local charities. A great way to dress more colourfully – inside and out.

+1: Chinese New Year Festival in Budapest Chinatown

7–8 February (with related programs until 10 February)

To close the carnival season on a truly spectacular note, head to Budapest’s Chinatown for the Chinese New Year Festival celebrating the Year of the Horse. This free, large-scale event brings together cultural performances, crafts, food and hands-on activities for all ages.

Expect lion and dragon dances, kung fu shows, Sichuan street food prepared by guest chefs from Chengdu, traditional games, calligraphy workshops, hanfu costume try-ons and live stage performances throughout the day. With easy access, free parking and an incredibly rich program, this festival is one of February’s most vibrant highlights.

Whether you prefer magic tricks, horse races, live music, fashion talks or cultural celebrations, Budapest’s carnival season has something for everyone. Dress up – or don’t – and enjoy the city at its most playful.
