Back to School: Budapest's First School Street is Ready

2025.09.08

After several other European cities, Budapest now has a school street, which is well worth checking out when walking through the Palace District!

Instead of parked cars, Trefort High School in the eighth district now has benches, tables and plants in front of it. The area in front of the school has been closed to traffic, creating a school street which could become a great community space. You can meet friends here, chat and do your homework, and thanks to the seating, it's also a great place to take a break while sightseeing.

In good weather, you can even hold a class outside thanks to the easily movable chairs and tables on the school street. When we visited, classes were in progress.

The concept of school streets has been proven in several European cities. Their goal is to create a safer, healthier and more liveable environment for students and teachers,' writes Telex.

However, it's important to note that not the entire street has become car-free, only the section in front of the high school, which is accessed from Szentkirályi Street. The rest of the street continues working as a dead end from Puskin Street.

Budapest's first school street, which could be followed by several others, is a very pleasant and inviting place — we definitely recommend visiting it! It is a few minutes' walk from Uránia, and it is worth taking a photo of the former Stühmer chocolate factory and headquarters along the way — it now operates as a hotel.
