Fővám Square is located in the heart of Budapest, on the border of Districts V and IX, at the Pest end of Szabadság Bridge. In 1817, it was called Salzplatz, in the 1850s Sóház Square, and from 1866 Só Square, as the salt office and salt warehouse were located between Só Street and today's Fővám Square.
The two-story Fővámház (Main Customs House) was built between 1870 and 1874, designed by Miklós Ybl in the Neo-Renaissance style. Today, this palace is the central building of Corvinus University. The Budapest Public Works Council named the square after this building when it was handed over. After World War II, between 1949 and 1991, it was called Dimitrov Square.
The square took on its current form during the landscaping work connected to the construction of the second underpass to the Metro 4 station between 2007 and 2009.
The square is located at the Pest end of Szabadság Bridge and continues along Vámház Boulevard towards Kálvin Square. It is one of the stations on the M4 metro line, so it is easily accessible by metro, but the Pest riverside trams (2, 2B, 23) and the Kiskörút trams (47, 48, 49) also stop here. The bus stop for bus 15 and the terminus for trolleybus 83 are located in front of the Central Market Hall. Night buses 934, 979, and 979A also stop here.
Budapest is rolling out brand-new cycling highways that will make it easier than ever to explore the city by bike, with safer lanes along the Grand Boulevard and major roads leading from the center outward.
