Just for One Day: Visit "Tengerre magyar!", a Great Exhibition, for Free

  • Address

    Ludovika tér 2-6, Budapest, 1083

  • Event date

    2025.10.05

Due to the great interest, the temporary exhibition of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, entitled "Tengerre magyar!" / "Hungarians to the Sea!", can be visited until October 5th - and it can be visited for free on the last day. The exhibition presents the little-known history of Hungarian seafaring and related marine natural science research, and is curated by Gábor Zsigmond, Director General of the Hungarian National Museum.

It can be visited for free on October 5th, the closing day, and then it will go on a national tour, the first stop of which will be Salföld in mid-October.

What can be seen at the "Tengerre magyar!" exhibition?

For example, scientific material from the Hungarian Adriatic research expedition before World War I can be seen here, as well as living creatures that Hungarian marine biologists studied in 1913 and 1914.

The panels show a picture of the port of Rijeka, built as a Hungarian state investment, which was at one time the tenth busiest sea outlet in Europe.

The exhibition is interesting because it sheds light on the Adriatic aspects of the medieval Hungarian Kingdom, including the Fifth Crusade led by King Andrew II, which set off from the port of today's Split.

In addition to the stories of Hungarian seafaring, an installation evoking a ship can also bring former Hungarian seafaring closer to families with children. Children can also try out what it was like to break through the Otranto sea lock in 1917 in front of a screen.
