pubs and bars in budapest
Budapest's first English-style pub opened in 1985, in the 5th district of Budapest, right in the centre of town, and its brilliant atmosphere has not changed a bit in the past quarter of a century.
But Budapest definitely has changed: since the abolition of Communism in 1990, an array of Irish, English and German-style pubs and bars have opened up in the city, replacing the classic Hungarian bars with plain checked-covered tables.
Most pubs and bars in Budapest are located in the Pest downtown area, in district 5, and there is a rich choice of watering holes.
There are large sports bars, offering good food, plenty of beer and large screens with sports events with foreign language commentary, as well as dark, intimate cocktail bars.
Beware of strip bars though, as it is easy to be inconvenienced if you make the wrong choice.
