As with the Kiraly Bath, this bath was also
constructed at the orders of the Pasha Mustapha Sokoli
(pasha of Buda), around 1566. Who took an existing
medieval bath house structure and reconstructed to his
own tastes and Turkish styles. The octagon shaped building covers an
octagon shaped center pool
made of red marble. It is a remarkable and unique
building from the Turkish era, a sort of a travel back
400 years in time. The water contains many minerals
that help ailments but perhaps more importantly, it
has a unique quality of being slightly radio active.
It's this quality that doctors often prescribe their rheumatic
patients a daily cure visit for a week, after which
time there are remarkable results.
In the 19th century, an extension of a steam bath
and a lap pool were built onto the existing structure.
This provided an exercise/recreation swim area for the
people, year round. Together, the complex was actually the first covered
swimming pool in Budapest. A must see if you are
interested in unique spas. It offers the full range of
steam bath, sauna, massage etc.
