Early departure from Budapest. First stop will be Gödöllő, favorite summer retreat of the Hapsburg family. Inside visit of the Baroque palace Grassalkovich. Drive through amazing Mátra Mountains, site of Hungary’s highest peak, Kékes (1,015 meters). Early afternoon arrival to Eger, famous for its wines and legendary resistance to the invading Turks and Habsburgs. Walking tour of the city after check in at the hotel.
After breakfast drive among the castle-spotted hills of Zemplén. Visit Vizsoly and its tiny church and see the first Bible translated into Hungarian language. Short visit to the castle of Füzer, Füzérradvány and on top of all Sárospatak with its wonderful loggia, library and the Sub Rosa hall. Afternoon arrival to Tokaj, one of the major wine regions of Hungary, the home of Aszu: Vinum regum, Rex vinorum (king of the wine, wine of the kings). Taste the local specialties in friendly winecellars. Dinner and overnight in Tarcal.
After early morning departure, drive to Kecskemét, birthplace of the famous composer Zoltán Kodály and home of the esteemed music center named after him. Walking tour of the city: Kodály Institute, Calvinist Church, Old Church, Cifra Palace, Town Hall. Continue by crossing Danube to Simontornya. Enjoy the wonderful spa facilities of your hotel. Dinner and overnight in a Castle Hotel.
Drive to Lake Balaton and take the ferry to Tihany with its Abbey church founded in 1055. Proceed to Herend, home of the world famous porcelain factory founded in 1839. Visit the museum of the factory and trace its illustrious history, including grand successes such as Queen Victoria's commission for a set with a special pattern, named after her ever since. Continue to Veszprém where you will see the Castle district, Gizella Chapel and the Cathedral. Arrive in the evening to Zalacsány for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast visit the castle of Sümeg and continue to Kőszeg. Walk around Jurisics Square and visit St.James Church from the 14th century, the Ambrozy House and Jurisics Castle. Continue to Sopron, one of Hungary's most beautiful baroque towns, an international gold medal recipient for protection of monuments. Arrive for dinner and overnight to Röjtökmuzsaj.
Visit the Eszterhazy Castle in Fertőd, often called the Hungarian Versailles. Continue to Győr, where Napoleon spent a night in 1809. Finalstop is the oldest Hungarian building, the Abbey of Pannonhalma. The library consist of over 300,000 volumes among them more then 70 codices from the 11th century. The Art Gallery contains valuable 16th-18th century works among them a few genuine masterpieces. Guided tour of the Abbey. Return to Budapest in the late afternoon hours. Drop off at your selected hotels.
