Dominican House

Dominican House
7601 Pécs, Színház tér 2.

It is worth carefully observing the upstairs façades of the surrounding buildings when walking along Király street: you may see richly decorated windows and rosettes.

The church and monastery of the Dominican order used to stand on the land of 2 Szinház square. The construction of the church started in 1724, however, the works were not yet finished in 1768. The church was converted to be an apartment house in the 19th century, its ruinous walls were incorporated into the house standing there today. A pyro-granite plaque on the façade shows the picture of the old church. The black marble slab in the middle of the square reminds the passers-by of the Dominicans who settled in Pécs twice: once in 1288 and in 1688 for the second time. The present Dominican House - a cultural centre of the town - is a dominant building of the square.
