Cemetery Chapel

Cemetery Chapel
7632 Pécs, Siklósi út

In February 1932 the Roman Catholic Communities of Pécs published a call for proposals concerning the building of a cemetery chapel. The contract was awarded to Nendvitch Andor Jr. and Károly Weichinger. The plan and the budget was approved by diocesan bishop Ferenc Virág.
The construction contract was awarded to construction entrepreneurs Ignác Gadó and Károly Kristóf.
The design of internal decoration and the glass windows was done by an apprentice of Bertalan Székely, Sándor Nagy. However, realisation was carried out by "locals": the frescos of the chapel and the crypt were painted by Stefán Henrik Szelle, whereas the glass paintings were made in the workshop of Hugó Johan.
The crypt's fresco is entitled "Jesus on the Cross". To the right side from the stairs you can see six apostles, to the left you can see six Hungarian saints. The nave's narrow but big glass paintings are the "Mourning Virgin" and "Christ Resurrected".
The St. Michael chapel was blessed by the bishop on 9 July 1933. The organ made by the famous Angster Organ Factory was blessed one and a half years later.
