Vigadó Restaurant was built in 1826 under the plans of Ferenc Povolny. The Classicistic-style building was originally operated as a bathing house. From the end of the 1800s until the 1970s, a terrace was also open to guests, but then it was closed. In 2003, the reopening of Vigadó’s terrace in the fashion of the original conditions was accompanied by the introduction a new selection of gastronomic specialties, and at the same time meant the revival of old traditions.
Today, Vigadó Restaurant is the “civic” catering unit that looks back on the longest traditions in the city, in the heart of the Great Forest of Debrecen.
Under the shade of the century-old trees, there is a garden where
peace walks hand in hand with merriment;
a Mediterranean-style terrace offers the typical tastes of traditional Hungarian cuisine;
traditional folk plainness is combined with modern civil elegance.
The terrace of the restaurant is open from May to October, and welcomes guests with a broad selection of oven-baked and grilled dishes, bread scones, specialties of the Hungarian cuisine. The terrace full of flowers and with its Mediterranean atmosphere is popular not only among the local inhabitants: in 2006, it was deservedly awarded with the Rosemary Prize of the Hungarian Tourist Association and the Movement for Floral Hungary, and a year later, it received the recognition, “Business of the Year 2007”.
