Citadel

1206634770citadellaOK.jpg
Address: 1118 Citadella sétány
City: Budapest
Area: District 11.
Phone: 466 5794
Opening Hours: 9–21h

The Citadel was built as a military fortress on the highest point of Budapest’s city centre by Habsburg Austria, following the 1848-49 Revolution. The construction was finished in 1854, and the main function of the building was to present a constant threat to rebellious

Hungarians. However, Austria and Hungary have reached the Compromise of 1867, so the city has not suffered any artillery fire from here. During WWII, it was used as an anti-aircraft defence position, and suffered heavy damages from bombs. There is a 3-level air defence bunker within the Citadel, which was also added during WWII. It features an exhibition with waxworks, and objects of the age, and a photo exhibition titled "the siege of Budapest" from 1944-1945.

It can be reached on foot from Szt.Gellért tér, as well as from the Buda bridgehead of Elizabeth Bridge, or by bus number 27 from Móricz Zsigmond tér.
