Hungarian classical and folk music are renowned all over the world. Hungarian composers such as Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály and Franz Liszt have helped shape Europe’s and the world’s music life and teaching methods. Budapest’s concert halls are always bustling with life, as artists from all over the world perform here regularly.
The Budapest Spring Festival and the Budapest Autumn Festival are arranged every year, showcasing the best of Hungarian and international music, theatre, film and other arts.
The original-language opera and ballet performances at the Hungarian State Opera House and the Erkel Theatre are mostly fully booked well in advance. The most famous Hungarian opera, Bánk Bán of Erkel Ferenc and the world-famous ballet, the Csodálatos Mandarin are played all year round.
The Budapest Operetta Theatre plays the works of Kálmán Imre, Huszka Jenő and Szirmai Albert (Marica grófnő, Lili bárónő, Mágnás Miska), and world-famous musicals, such as Romeo and Juliet, and the Magic Flute.
The Madách Theatre in downtown Budapest plays the Phantom of the Opera – this play is so popular that other, regular performances of this theatre had to be moved to other, less popular theatres.
Drama theatres in Budapest also play international and Hungarian musicals. English and other foreign language shows are often shown at the Merlin Theatre.
The world-famous Hungarian folklore ensembles, such as the Hungarian National Folk Ensemble, the Duna Ensemble and the Rajkó Band, regularly perform at the Duna Palota, at the House of Traditions and the Budapest Puppet Theatre.
