The people of Budapest have always been avid movie goers. Until about 1995, all movie theatres had just a single screen, and varying sound and picture quality. In the past decade and a half, things have changed, mainly because of the shopping malls that popped up everywhere in Budapest like mushrooms after the rain.
All shopping malls feature multi-screen, air-conditioned, palatial new movie theatres. The single-screen movies have mostly closed down. The surviving ones are mostly members of the Art-Mozi (Art Movie) network, which offers movies that are not necessarily main-stream.
If you drop by a movie theatre in Budapest, and suddenly realize you need to indulge in a little popcorn destruction, don't panic - many movies are in English, with Hungarian subtitles. Ticket prices range from HUF 800 to HUF 1400 per seat, so it's probably even cheaper than at home.
Some theatres even feature VIP rooms, where tickets start at around HUF 3,000, in exchange for a big leather chair and unlimited snacks consumption.
