There are quite a few remnants of Roman civilization in the territory of present-day Budapest. The Romans have occupied the territory of today's Transdanubia (Western Hungary) in the 1st century.
In the middle of downtown Pest, on the northern side of Március 15 tér lies Contra Aquincum, which used to be one of the supplementary fortresses of Aquincum's Roman camp town across the Danube.
The ruins of Aquincum's civilian town are in the northern part of the Buda side. A museum and an archaeological park were built around the former Roman town.
The ruin area displays about one quarter of the original civilian town, with the most characteristic public buildings and dozens of private houses.
These ruins are from when the Roman Empire flourished in the 2nd and the 3rd centuries. The chronoscopes installed in the park allow a glimpse into how the buildings looked like 1600 years ago.
