art noveau
Art Noveau is an international architectural, art and design style which flourished from the third part of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th, and it represents the actual secession from earlier, historical styles such as Neo-Gothic, Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque.
The most famous Art Noveau architect of the age was Ödön Lechner, who built the Museum of Applied Arts and the Institute of Geology in Budapest. Art Nouveau is best described as highly stylized, with lots of traditional ornaments and smooth geometrical curves.
An interesting aspect of Art Nouveau that due to its dependence on folk art, its characteristics throughout Europe can vary wildly, as these ornaments differ from country to country.
The memories of Art Nouveau mostly lie in two areas of Budapest: in Lipótváros (to the north of the Inner City), and City Park. However, several other buildings of this style are scattered in Budapest.

We find records about the "miraculous" springs spurting up on the territory of the Bath from as early a date as the 15th century. These springs were later favoured by the Turks as well, as they were larger and hotter than the Buda baths of the period. In the 17th century, the site was named Sárosfürdő (Mud bath) because of the fine spring silt that was pushed up together with the spring water and settled at the bottom of the pools. |
